When Hye Seong did start like him, I wasn’t entirely sure I understood why. The fact that he was able to read minds, not withstanding, he still behaved in a lot of ways like a high school student. As lovable as LJS is, with his obscene collarbones and anime proportions, there were many times that Soo Ha’s motivations, his decision making and his idealism made him somewhat hard to sympathize with. I found that I had this issue with Soo Ha. If the guy isn’t actually underage (which creates it’s own set of issues) his way of viewing the world tends to be quite idealistic and simplistic. Although sometimes the relative immaturity of the MMC can be a bit of a problem. The guy tends to fall in love first, or at least acknowledge his feelings first, and then pursue the female lead with a sort of puppyish devotion. The age difference favoring the lady incentivizes the main male lead being less of an ass early on. Additionally, her sassy confidence is infectious to watch.Īs a general rule, I think Noona-romances are fun.

In fact, she is more than willing to sacrifice ethics in the service of her own idea of justice. She has a rigorous sense of justice, but that doesn’t make her intrinsically ethical. Her righteousness does not come from a place of moralism, but rather a sense of stubborn pride.

Hye Seong is worldly, even from an early age, and full of righteous indignation. Niceness, as a rule, is a quality that you attribute to someone because their vapidity is such that you can’t think of anything more interesting to say about them. But frankly, we don’t need more ‘nice’ female characters. Lawyer Jang (or Jjang) Hye Seong is another element of this show that deserves special recognition and appreciation. He seems like he could have chemistry with a loaf of bread, and although I’ve never seen Lee Bo Young in anything before, her performance as Hye Seong is an absolute treat. I’m unsurprised to once again find Lee Jong Suk charming. Even when I didn’t particularly like what they writers were doing with one character or the other I couldn’t help but root for the couple because they were fun to watch together. They both are really well cast, I personally found their performances impeccable, and there is no denying their stellar onscreen chemistry throughout. I think the love for this show can largely be attributed to the leads: Lee Jong Suk and Lee Bo Young. With all that in mind, I’m fully aware that I’m probably in the minority here, but while well acted and for the most part very enjoyable, I feel IHYV is an extremely overrated drama.īefore you stop reading all together, I want to talk about the things this show does well, because I genuinely did enjoy the experience of watching this, especially for the first 60% of the show.

MDL is by no means the end all be all of drama quality, but it’s a good place to look to gauge the general reaction of the fandom to a given show. 1 higher than other amazing or well regarded shows such as Master’s Sun, My Love from Another Star, Mother and Cruel City. Tying with two other all time favorites: Kill Me, Heal Me and Healer from early this year. IHYV scores an exceptional rating on MDL of 9.0. A lot of people really enjoy this show, and many would even place it toward the top of a list of all time favorite dramas. The final deciding factor that caused me to start IHYV was the involvement of Lee Jong Suk, although this show was on my radar for quite a while before I actually watched it. Recently, I finished watching I Hear Your Voice, a Noona-romance/courtroom drama including magical realism elements, namely mind-reading. In the interest of procrastination I thought I would supply you with a review, as I haven’t written a full one since I finished She Was Pretty. I should really be working on the next chapter of “ Thank You for Hesitating”, but things are about to get heartbreaking and I’m putting off dealing with that emotionally.
